Is there a diabetes self-test?

16 million Americans have diabetes, but many people don’t realize it. African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians have higher rates of diabetes in their lifetime. Diabetes can cause long-term complications, which affect the kidneys, eyes, heart, blood vessels, and nerves. Many pages of the site are dedicated to preventing and treating diabetes complications. (See Diabetes Symptoms)

When diagnosing diabetes, doctors rely mainly on the results of specific glucose tests. However, the test results are only part of the information used to diagnose diabetes. The doctor will also consider your physical examination, the presence or absence of symptoms, and your medical history. Some severely ill patients temporarily have the problem of elevated blood sugar levels. Once the condition is relieved, they will return to normal. In addition, certain medications may change your blood sugar levels (the most common are steroids and certain diuretics (water pills)).

The two main tests used to measure blood sugar problems are:

1. Directly measure blood glucose levels during an overnight fast

2. A method to measure the human body's ability to correctly handle the excess sugar that appears after drinking high-glycemic beverages.

Self-check method

Self-test blood sugar levels regularly to show how effective the combination of diet, exercise, and medication is. The test is usually performed before meals and at bedtime. If you are sick or stressed, you may need more frequent checkups.

A device called a blood glucose meter can provide accurate blood glucose levels. There are different types of equipment. Usually, you prick your finger with a small needle called a lancet. It gives you a drop of blood. Put blood on the test paper, and then put the test paper in the device. The results are available within 30-45 seconds.

A health care provider or diabetes care instructor can help you set up an appropriate check-up schedule. It also describes how to deal with the different ranges of blood glucose levels obtained in the self-test.

Test results can be used to adjust diet, activity, or medication to keep blood levels in the correct range. The test provides valuable information for healthcare providers and identifies high and low blood lipids before serious problems occur. Keeping accurate records of test results will help you and your healthcare plan to develop the best way to control diabetes. In the United States, 20.8 million children and adults suffer from diabetes, and nearly one-third (ie 6.2 million) do not realize this.
