Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce insulin, sugar, starch, and other hormones needed to change food into daily life. Although genetic and environmental effects such as lack of exercise and obesity are at work, the cause of diabetes remains a mystery.

The best way to understand diabetes is to understand the long, thin pancreas behind the stomach. The pancreas is responsible for regulating the body's glucose use. There are two main functions. One is to produce pancreatic endocrine hormones that help regulate metabolism, and the other is to produce pancreatic digestive enzymes. When blood sugar begins to rise, insulin's role is to push muscle and fat cells to absorb glucose needed for future activities, but excess fat is stored in the liver. Some people cannot produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes), or their body resists the insulin produced (type 2 diabetes), so they need to produce an external source. In any case, the result is the same. Also called type 1 or juvenile diabetes, it usually affects children and adolescents.
