The Maryland Department of Health is calling on people with diabetes to protect themselves during a pandemic.

WASHINGTON (WDVM) - According to the CDC, people with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing serious diseases caused by COVID-19.

The Maryland Department of Health said diabetes and the virus cause inflammation in the body.
However, when inflammation is severe, it can be more difficult to fight a disease like COVID-19, which can lead to many health complications.

To reduce morbidity, the department recommends the following tips:

  • Keep your blood sugar at a normal level
  • Drink electrolyte and simple carbohydrate drinks
  • Keep your recipes complete and stock up on extra supplies
  • Keep diabetes care supplies and equipment clean and disinfected.

Health experts say it's important to monitor and record your blood glucose levels. MDH recommends talking to your doctors because it plays an important role in maintaining your health.
